Learn Some Basics About Car Dent Repair Around Brisbane North and Enoggera

Requests for cosmetic work are some of the most common that vehicle body repair workers receive. These include a series of functional fixes, including removing scuffs, polishing or waxing the vehicle, tending to the interior, and performing car dent repair. Having dents in a vehicle is highly annoying, so you want to make sure that you take your vehicle in quickly should you experience a dent that can be worked out by a skilled panel beater. You might be wondering what some of the techniques they employ to remove dents are, and how they differ. We’re glad you asked! Platypus Creek Collision Repair, experienced at car dent repair around Brisbane, are here to fill you in on what you need to know about the car dent repair process.

The Basics: How Dent Repair in Brisbane Works

Traditionally, a technique of choice for removing car dents was performed by using what is known as body filler. The paint first needs to be removed from the dented area (because filler doesn’t stick well to paint) extending to about three or four inches from where the dent ends. The body filler needs to be mixed (it’s two components that combine into the final product), and then quickly applied to the dented area. The filler dries and hardens rapidly.

Generally speaking, you’ve got about 5 minutes to get it into place. The filler is then spread beyond the actual size of the dent because the general idea behind the technique is to get it filled in, and then grind down the extra afterwards. Sandpaper is used to grind it down to until it is smooth and even with the rest of the vehicle surface. If there are any imperfections, they can be filled in with a material known as spot putty. Following that, the area is resanded, primed, and then painted to match the original colour of the car. A pretty involved process, but not the only one that exists for dent repair.

There is another method known as paintless dent repair. This process seeks to address the dent in a more direct manner, by gaining entry to the interior of the vehicle body (usually by removing vehicle panels), then slowly and carefully working the dent out with sustained pressure. It makes use of some specialised tools, but in the end, it’s preferred by some because there is no need to make use of messy fillers or sanding. It’s also a less time-consuming process.
